The beautiful Traumantana Mountains and dramatic pine-clad coastline make this a very interesting area to buy property in Mallorca.
Banyalbufar is an old Moorish village (the name in Arabic means 'little vineyard by the sea'). The impact of the Moors on the surrounding terraces is still clearly evident and they are still farmed.
The area is steeped in local culture and tradition, and there are no community apartment developments here, so if you are looking for a real get-away from the more touristy side of Mallorca, Banyalbufar should be on your list to visit.
Moving further up the coast you come to Valdemossa where Chopin stayed in the winter of 1838. Another classic and historical Mallorquin town, Valdemmossa is also a primary tourist attraction with many coaches stopping here on the way to Deia.
Deia itself is one of the most famous places in Mallorca and is best known for being the home of Robert Graves. A stunning location, local history and culture have made this a very popular haunt for artisans over the years, although in more recent years these things have also provided attraction for wealthy home buyers and this has pushed prices up. Deia in particular is the most sought-after location.
There are very few new build developments in this area although some large old fincas have been turned (very tastefully) into apartments. Most properties are either modern or older villas, or old traditional town and village houses.
If you want to be in the mountains in an area steeped in local culture then this area should be on your list for consideration. For sea views look to Deia, Banyalbufar and other coastal villages. These areas are among the most beautiful on Mallorca and are wonderful places to have a second home or holiday bolt-hole. Consider access to Palma though - although not far away access to these parts is via winding mountain roads so these locations are not so good for permanent living unless you like being remote.
It is possible to find small townhouses for around Euro 200.000 but this would be requiring renovation. If you are interested in this type of property in Banyalbufar and other coastal villages it would be sensible to allow a budget of at least Euro 350.000 for a property in reasonable order. Deia is more expensive as it is so well known.
