Badia de Palma (The Bay of Palma) is the largest bay on Mallorca and home to one of the most elegant and cosmopolitan
cities in Europe.
Dominated by its grand cathedral, Palma City is a unique mixture of historical and modern architecture.
There are a number of distinct areas, ranging from the wonderful historical buildings of Palma Old Town to the
exclusive and modern area of Puerto Nous.
Palma is a leading European centre for style and cuisine. It also has one of the most famous harbours
in the Mediterranean.
Palma is regarded as one of the most desirable places in the world to live. It is a lively and cosmopolitan town with an abundance
of restaurants, high quality shops, culture, night-life and other entertainment. Sometimes referred to as a small and more relaxed version of Barcelona.
The Old Town of Palma and other areas such as Santa Catalina and Paseo Maritimo hold great scope for those
looking to buy a cosmopolitan city property in Mallorca. There are apartments and townhouses with great charm and character amongst
the wide variety of restaurants, bars and entertainment Palma de Mallorca has to offer.
Good properties in the areas mentioned above will sell quickly due to the desirability of the location. Property in Palma and in Palma Old Town in particular continues to hold great investment potential. Off-plan properties, refurbishment and renovation projects represent particularly interesting opportunities.
If you are planning to buy a property in Mallorca with a view to living there permanently, or if you want a second home but in a city environment, Palma should be at the top of your list. For a vibrant, all-year-round lifestyle there is no where else on Mallorca to match the range of facilities and entertainment on offer in Mallorca's capital.
Renovation projects still hold great potential. As in the UK, it is possible to make good capital gains simply by buying properties that are a bit tired / out-of-date and need modernising. More substantial renovations can bring more substantial gains. We would, however, warn against the latter unless you have some experience in this area and/or good contacts on the ground in Palma.
It is occassionally possible to find small apartments in interesting parts of the city for as little as Euro 280.000, although apartments in Santa Catalina and other notable areas toward the sea-front parts of Palma will range from Euro 300.000 upward, and there are still relatively few good options at this price level.
More spacious apartments in the better areas will be more, and sea-views command a premium, so prices of Euro 500.000 to 750.000 for 2 and 3 bedroom apartments are quite commonplace, and prices rise up well into 7 figures for the best Palma Old Town and front-line properties. ("Front line" means the property has no other buildings between it and the sea).
